1. would 和used to都表示過去的習慣行為，意思為：過去常常。would 表示過去某時間的意志、愿望和決心。如：

He would come to have a chat with us when he was free. 他有空時，常會過來跟我們聊天

He used to live in a cottage near the river. 他過去常住在河邊的一座小木房里。

2. would 往往強調過去的一種可能性,而不暗示現在的情況;而used to強調過去常這樣干，而現在不干了, 強調今惜對比。如：

He would sit there alone, thinking. 他會獨自一人坐在那兒思考。

He used to swim in the river in summer. 夏天他常常在這條河里游泳。

3. would 作will的過去式，表示過去的一種意愿或將要做的事情，意思為：將會。而used to無此意義。如：

People would go to ask him for advice when they came into trouble. 人們碰到麻煩事，就會去問他解決的辦法。

4. would有時也可用來指現在，表示一種委婉、客氣的請求，對于用它來提問題的回答，須用will，不能用would。而used to無此意義及用法。如：

Would you please help me with this case? 請幫助我提一下這個箱子好嗎?

Yes, I’d like to. / I will. 好，我非常樂意。

5. would一般接表示動作的動詞，不能與表示狀態或情感、意識方面的詞連用，而used to無此限制。如：

He would get here at eight. 他在八點會到這兒來。

He used to be / get here at eight. 他過去常在八點來這兒。

6. would表示過去某一段時間常發生的事，一般要接具體的時間做狀語，而used to一般不一定要接具體時間做狀語。如：

I used to go to school by bike. 我過去常騎單車上學。

I would go to school by bike when I was young. 我年小時，常騎單車上學。

7. used to 往往強調事實，而 would 常帶有主觀上的感情的色彩。如：

He used to help mother with her housework. 他過去常幫助母親做家務。

He would help mother with her housework. 他會幫助幫助母親做家務。

8. 含used to的句子，變為否定句或疑問句時，既可在used 后加not，或將 used 提到句首;也可在used to前面加don’t，或在句首加do，同時將used to改為use to。如：

He used to get up at six. 他過去常在六點起床。

—He usedn’t to get up at six. / He didn’t use to get up at six. 他過去常不在六點起床。

—Used he to get up at six? / Did he use to get up at six? 他過去常在六點起床嗎?
