◆entrance n.

1. 表示“在入口處”，通常用介詞 at；表示“……的入口”，通常用介詞 to, 有時也用介詞 of。如：

Where is the entrance to the park, please? 請問公園的入口在什么地方?

All entrances to the city are guarded by the police. 進城的所有入口都有警察守衛。

The entrance of the hall is on your right. 大廳的入口在你右邊。

一般說來，用介詞 to 多用來指方向，即指“通向”，用介詞 of多用來指位置(但不絕對，總的說來，用 to 的情形較多)。比較：

There is a front and a back entrance to the theatre. 這家劇院有一個前門和一個后門。

I met her at the front entrance of the theatre. 我在劇院的前門口遇見了她。

2. 表示準許進入某場所、某組織、某機構等(此時的 entrance是不可數名詞)，通常只用介詞 to。如：

They were refused entrance to the club. 他們被拒于俱樂部門外。

Entrance to the exhibit is on weekdays only. 只有在周日才能參觀本展覽。

◆equal adj.，v. & n.

1. 用作形容詞，表示“相同的”、“相等的”等。如：

They are of equal height. 他們一樣高。

The two men are equal in ability. 這兩個人能力相等。

Cut the cake into six equal parts. 把蛋糕分成六等分。

用于be equal to 表示“等于”、“能勝任”、“能應付”等，其中的 to 是介詞(其后接動詞時應用動名詞)。如：

This is equal to saying that he knows her well. 這就等于說他很熟悉她。

He is equal to (the job of) running the office. 他能勝任管理辦公室(的工作)。

有時可用其他連系動詞代替 be。如：

She didn’t feel equal to receiving visitors. 她感到身體不適，不能會客。

2. 用作動詞，意為“等于”、“比得上”等，是及物動詞，不要受其形容詞用法的影響，在其后加介詞 to。如：

Six times eight equals forty-eight. 6乘以8等于48。

No man equals him in strength. 沒有誰的力氣比得上他。

但是不說：No man equals to him in strength.

3. 用作名詞，意為“相等的事物”、“(地位等)相同的人”等，是可數名詞。如：

Let x be the equal of y. 假設 x 等于 y。

No one could be his equal at telling a story. 講故事沒有比得上他。

The teacher is popular because he treats the students as (his) equals. 這位教師受人歡迎，因為他平等地對待學生。

◆equip v.

表示“裝備”、“配備”，要以被裝備的對象作賓語，而不能以裝備物作賓語；其句型通常為：equip＋裝備對象＋with＋裝備物(有時使用被動語態形式)。如：

Every room is equipped with air conditioning. 每個房間都裝了空調。(不說 Air onditioning is equipped in……)

Please equip yourself with a sharp pencil and a rubberfor the exam. 請準備一枝尖的鉛筆和一塊橡皮參加考試。

常用于引申義。如：

He equipped himself for the journey. 他為旅行準備了行裝。

Many politicians are not equipped for public speaking. 許多政治家沒有演說才能。

We should equip our children with a good education. 我們應該使孩子們得到良好的教育。

Your education will equip you to earn a good living. 你受的教育將能使你謀得好的生計。
