◆all & both

all(用于三者或三者以上)與 both(用于兩者)在用法上有很多相似之處，現放在一起講述如下：

1. 與定冠詞、指示代詞、形容詞性物主代詞、名詞所有格等連用時，應放在這些詞之前而不是之后，并且一般還可在它們之間加介詞of。如：

all / both (of) the books 所有這些/這兩本書

all / both (of) her children 她所有的/這兩個孩子

all / both (of) these vases 所有這些/這一對花瓶

2. 在人稱代詞之前只能用 all of / both of (不能沒有of)，而在單獨使用的名詞(即沒有其它詞修飾)之前只能用 all/ both (不能有 of)。如：

誤：all / both us

正：all / both of us 我們所有的人/兩人

誤：all / both of children

正：all / both children 所有／兩個孩子

3. 用作主語同位語時，其位置不一定是緊跟在主語之后，而通常放在行為動詞之前，特殊動詞之后。如：

They were all (both) asleep. 我們都(倆都)睡著了。

We have all (both) read the book. 我們都(倆都)讀過這本書。

注：若特殊動詞單獨使用，則 all/both 應放在它們之前。如：

How kind they all are! 他們都是多么友好�。�

You haven’t been there, but we both have. 你們沒去過那兒，但我們倆去過。

4. all 除表示具體的人或物外，還可指抽象的事物或現象（常譯為“一切”），此時應注意：all 一般單獨使用（即其后不接名詞也不接 of）且表示單數意義（注：both 無此用法）。如：

All goes well. 一切順利。

All is not gold that glitters. 發亮的東西不一定都是金子。

比較：

All is silent　成籟俱寂。（指抽象的現象）

All are silent　人人都沉默不語。（指具體的人）
