◆bother v.

1. 表示用某事麻煩某人，一般用介詞 with 或 about。如：

Don’t bother with [about] it. 不要為此事費心(煩惱)。

I’m sorry that I have to bother you with [about] this problem. 對不起，我要用這個問題來麻煩你了。

2. 其后接動詞時，通常用不定式。如：

Don’t bother to do it. 不要費心去做了。

He didn’t even bother to say thank you. 他甚至連說聲謝謝都不肯。

在現代英語中，bother 后也可跟動名詞。如：

I don’t know if Sally’s coming. I didn’t bother asking.

我為知道莎莉是否會來，我沒有問一下。

有時后接 about doing sth 也可表示類似意思。如：

You needn’t bother to come up [about coming up]. 你不必費心來了。

3. 在口語中說 don’t bother, 主要用于謝絕對方主動提出的善意幫助，意為“不用費心了”、“不用麻煩了”。如：

A：Shall I help you with the washing up? 要不要我幫你洗 碗碟?

B：Don’t bother, I’ll do it later. 不必麻煩了，我等一會再 洗。

◆bottom n.

1. 用作名詞，表示“底部”、“遠處”，通常用單數形式；若表示“在底部”、“在遠處”等，其前通常用介詞 at。如：

Sign your name at the bottom of the page, please. 請在這頁下端簽上你的名字。

The station is at the bottom of the street. 車站就在這條街的盡頭。

有時用于引申義。如：

He is at the bottom of the class. 他在班上排名最后。

He started at the bottom and worked her way up to becomemanager of the company. 他從最低的位置干起，通過自己的努力，當上了公司經理。

有時根據語境的需要也可能用 in 或 on。如：

There is some tea left in [at] the bottom of the cup. 有些茶葉留在茶杯底部。

What is on [at] the bottom of the sea? 海底有什么?

2. 口語中的 Bottoms up! 意為“干杯!”，注意其中的 bottoms要用復數形式。

◆brain n.

1. 表示“頭腦”、“腦子”，通常是不可數名詞，有時用作可數名詞，但通常用復數形式。如：

He has (a) good brain. 他很有頭腦。

Use your brain(s). 動動腦筋吧。

He hasn’t got much brain(s). 他沒什么頭腦。

注：可說 little brains 或 much brains, 但是通常不說 few brains, many brains。

2. 表示“極聰明的人”、“智者”，是可數名詞。如：

Some of the best brains in the country are working here.

國內一些最有聰明才智的人都在這兒工作。

◆brave adj.

表示“勇敢的”、“英勇的”。比較以下句型：

你那樣做真是很勇敢。

正：You were brave to do so.

正：It was brave of you to do so.

誤：It was brave for you to do so.

◆burned & burnt v.

1. 在美國英語中，動詞 burn 為規則動詞，其過去式和過去分詞均為 burned；在英國英語中，動詞 burn可以是規則的也可以是不規則的(即可用 burned 和 burnt)。所以當不考慮英國英語與美國英語的差別時，兩者形式�？苫煊�。如：

He burned [burnt] the old letters. 他把舊信燒掉了。

The house was burned [burnt] to the ground. 房子被燒成了灰燼。

注：無論在英國英語還是美國英語中，用于名詞前作定語時通常都用 burnt。如：

burnt sugar 燒焦的糖burnt fingers 燒傷的手指

A burnt child dreads the fire. 燒傷過的孩子怕火(一朝被蛇咬，十年怕草繩)。

2. 以上區別也適合于以下各組詞：learned / learnt, spoiled/spoilt, smelled/smelt, dreamed/dreamt, spelled/spelt 等。如：

He learned [learnt] the poem at school. 他在學校學過那首詩。

I dreamed [dreamt] about flying last night. 昨晚我夢見我在飛翔。

注：作定語時通常都用不規則形式。如：

a spoilt child 寵壞的孩子 spilt milk 潑灑的牛奶

a misspelt word 拼錯的單詞 等

特例：learned men 學者

◆bus n.

1. 表示“乘公共汽車”，可根據情況有多種表達。如：

他乘公共汽車去上學。

正：He goes to school by bus.

正：He goes to school on [in] a bus.

正：He takes a bus to school.

2. 表示幾路公共汽車，也可用多種表達，如“16路公共汽車”可表達為：Bus No. 16 / the No 16 bus / Bus 16 / the 16 bus

3. 漢語的“換車”，英語用 change buses 表示(bus 一定要用復數，其前不用限定詞)。如：

You’d have to change buses at least twice. 你至少要換兩次車。
