Look In Your Heart

　　A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.

　　"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend. I"d like to bring home with me."

　　"Sure," they replied, "we'd love to meet him."

　　"He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He lost a arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to live with us." "I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

　　"No. Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

　　"Son," said the father, "you don"t know what you"re asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a temble burden (負擔) on us. We have our own lives to live, and it"s very hard for us. I think you should just come home and forget about this guy. He"ll find a way to live himself."

　　At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him.

　　A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son had died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed he killed himself. The parents flew to San Francisco,

　　but to their surprise they discovered something they didn"t know —their son had only one arm and one leg.

　　譯：

　　這個故事講述了一個軍人在越南戰斗后，終于可以回家的事，他在舊金山給父母打電話說：“爸媽，我就要回家了。但我想求你們一件事，我想帶一個友人回家。”

　　“可以啊，”父母異口同聲地答道“我們很愉快能見到他。”

　　有件事情，我應該告知你們，“兒子持續說，”他戰役中受了重傷，失去了一只胳膊和一條腿，他無處可去，我想帶他回家和我們一起生活。”

　　“聽到這些我們覺得很難過，兒子�；蛘�，我們能夠幫他找到別的安身破命之所。”“不，爸，媽，我就是想讓他跟咱們生涯在一起。”

　　“兒子啊，”爸爸苦口婆心地說，”你豈非不清楚你的這個請求對我們象征著什么嗎?這樣的殘障人會給我們的生活帶來許多災以設想的累贅，我們本人還要生活，我們不能讓這樣的事件攻破我們畸形的生活，我以為你倒是應當立刻回來，把你的錯誤忘卻吧，他會有措施走好自己的路的。”

　　聽完這些話，兒子掛斷了電話，爾后便石沉大海。

　　多少天后，他的父母接到了一個來自舊金山警署的電話。警察說，他們的兒子從一幢高樓上跌下來，逝世了。警察確認這是一起自殘事件。悲哀欲絕的父母立即飛往舊金山，去停尸房認領兒子的尸體。他們認出了兒子，然而出其不意的是，他們的兒子只有一只胳膊和一條腿。
