The fastest way to achieve success in any area of your life is to know what you want before you start. You might be thinking to yourself that what I am saying is perfectly obvious yet how many people actually know exactly what they want. I mean most people have a general idea of what they would like, but that is normally all they have, just a general idea. If you don’t know exactly what you want, how can you make a plan to get it?
When you look at the lives of very successful people a pattern quickly emerges. Most successful people knew early in their lives exactly what it was that they wanted from life and immediately started moving in the direction of getting it. Just because you know what you want does not mean you will not make mistakes since making mistakes is just a part of achieving success. However, when you know what you want, you will quickly move past your mistakes and any failures along the journey since you are focused on the end result with conviction.
Before I moved to Asia to live a few years ago I had been in Thailand on a number of occasions on holidays long before I moved here. During these Asian holidays I had such a wonderful time that I could not get out of my mind how much I would like to live in Asia, not necessarily forever but at least for an extended period of time. For a couple of years I simply dreamt about living in Asia but I wasn’t sure what I would do if I moved to Thailand, I worried I might not be able to get a decent job and subsequently I made no concrete plans to go ahead with my fantasy idea, since that was all it was, just a fantasy.
Over time I cemented my desires to move to Asia when I made the decision that living in Thailand was exactly what I wanted to do and so I set a date to leave Australia and set in motion an entire series of events that all came to work out in my favor. Although I tied up all the loose ends in my life before I left Australia, I had no definite job lined up in Thailand for after I arrived but subconsciously I believed everything would turn out ok since I knew what I wanted and the rest is history.
I said to myself before I left Australia that I would spend the first month in Thailand on holidays and then find a job after that. I remember taping a piece of paper to my refrigerator that read, I believe in miracles, and I would constantly see this sign every time I was in the kitchen. The miracle I believed would happen was to find a great job in Thailand and be happy. The end result was, I started working in a senior management position with a great salary package and free accommodation exactly one month to the day after I arrived in Thailand. It really was a miracle and I’m certain it all happened for me just like I envisioned it would because I knew what I wanted.
During the course of my life I have seen similar miracles happen when I got clear about what I really wanted and things just fell into place nicely. Sure there might be a few rough patches along the way sometimes but hey, that’s life and these interruptions usually provide valuable lessons and strengthen our resolve to get what it is we really want.
